Caddo Lake is a 25,000 acre lake located between Texas and Louisiana. It is reported to be the only natural lake in Texas and has existed for several hundred years. The lake is popular for fishing, boating and swimming. With large stands of bald cypress trees and Spanish moss, it is also a frequent choice for film locations that want to capture the look of the “old South.”

Caddo Lake formed behind a huge log jam around 1800. The log jam was partially removed in the 1835 which improved the lake for navigation. The log jam was then completely removed in 1873, which caused water levels to drop and made steamboat navigation impossible. The steamboats were soon replaced by railroads. The lake has suffered from pollution and degradation over the years due to oil development and nearby army munitions production. In addition, a dam was added in the 1970s for flood control which stabilized water levels but restricted water flow. More recently, conservation efforts have been launched by groups like the Nature Conservancy and concerned citizens like Don Henley.

A boat tour is a good way to see the lake, and there are several companies that offer tours. The Graceful Ghost tours ( include an old fashioned steamboat and on a pontoon boat. Both tours are narrated and last about 1.5 hours, but the pontoon boat covers more ground and can access more shallow areas of the lake. However, if you prefer a more nostalgic and slower paced experience, the steamboat should be considered. Spring is probably the most popular time to see the lake as there are fewer bugs and more alligators. Overall, the lake is worth touring when in the area, but does not quite merit a special trip just to experience it.
