Get an early start on Th. AM to do Mt. Elbert - take a windbreaker/rainjacket, hiking boots, couple quarts of water, snacks, etc. If you leave town at 6AM, should be on the trailhead by a little before 7AM. early start is key, as you don't want to be caught in a raging thunderstorm above tree line late in the afternoon. If the sky is starting to turn real dark before you're getting close to the summit, consider turning around. Plan for maybe 4-5 hours to the summit, depending on conditioning, and I recommend the Black Cloud Trail from the south side of the mountain. The trail head is kind of hidden, but there's a turn off to your left just past the Mt. Elbert Lodge as you're headed back to Twin Lakes. It's considered a more difficult route, but it's not technical, and is shorter than the standard route from the east. Elevation gain is 4800' so take that into consideration. Also, you can get to the Black Cloud trailhead quicker from Aspen, but check with folks at the Ute Mountaineer for their suggestions. Another 3-4 hours down, and you should finish around 3-4 PM. Maybe sooner if you're moving fast.
