Cafe Sunflower is one of Atlanta’s top vegetarian restaurants. While vegan dishes are served, the restaurant is considered vegetarian. There are two locations, one in Buckhead and one in Sandy Springs.

The Buckhead restaurant was opened in 1997 a few years after Sandy Springs. They have similar but not identical menus. Sandy Springs has more Asian dishes, while the food presentation is fancier at Buckhead. Only Buckhead serves alcohol. The restaurants are owned by a husband and wife. The husband manages Buckhead and the wife oversees Sandy Springs. Cafe Sunflower offers reservations, and it’s a good idea to make one at the Buckhead location on Friday or Saturday night.

Buckhead offers a range of dishes including Italian, Mexican and American cuisine. The wine selection is mostly from Europe and California, and the wine is moderately priced. The Jamaican style ginger ale was good enough to order twice. Soups are made daily and include mushroom, lentil, and asparagus. The mushroom soup was excellent, and the steamed dumplings also are a reliable appetizer choice. Entrees include the sesame (soy) chicken, orzo eggplant lasagna and the garden loaf. The sesame chicken was average at best. A better option is the stir fry tofu or the ravioli. It’s worth saving some room for dessert; the chocolate cake and blueberry cobbler with ice cream are delicious.

Buckhead is noisier than Sandy Springs, especially on Friday and Saturday nights, but overall the ambiance is inviting and the service is good. For vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike, Cafe Sunflower is a quality restaurant that merits a visit.
