The Luau Kalamaku includes arts and crafts displays, a dinner and a show. It is held at a former sugar plantation on Kauai. If you are looking for a Hawaiian-themed dinner/show experience, this is a good choice, but it is slightly pricey.
The luau is held at the Kilohana Estate, located a few minutes drive from Lihue Airport. The estate has ample, well-manicured grounds that are pleasant to walk around. The main house has been restored to its 1930’s appearance and contains shops which are open during the day and evening. There is a small passenger train on the property too.
Prior to dinner, presenters and performers demonstrate Hawaiian arts and crafts, such as traditional games, which kids will enjoy. The dinner option also included an open bar for part of the evening. Dinner itself was only average and served buffet style. The main event is the show after dinner. It is fast-paced and uses dance, music and fire sticks to tell the story of the Polynesian explorers and their search for new lands. The show is well-choreographed and entertaining. The fire stick performers in particular are talented and crowd favorites.
Overall, the Luau Kalamaku provides an enjoyable Hawaiian islands experience. While it is a bit theatrical, the lively show still offers a sense of Hawaiian culture and dance, and it should appeal to a variety of tastes. A small downside is the large audience which makes seeing the performers more difficult. Seating in the middle area tends to be best as the stage is open and the cast moves around a lot. Tickets can be purchased for the show only, but the seat location may be worse.
