Nakato is a multi-generational family-owned Japanese restaurant. It opened in 1972 and is one of the oldest Japanese restaurants in Atlanta. There also are locations in North and South Carolina as well as in Missouri. The current Atlanta restaurant opened in 1990 next door to the prior facility. Nakato is a full-service dinner-only restaurant with multiple dining options and differing menus. The restaurant is best known for hibachi grill dining.

There are four dining options: hibachi grill, traditional table service, a sushi bar and a private tatami room. The hibachi grill, which includes a chef who entertains as he prepares a meal at the table, is probably the most popular and has a set menu of such items as chicken, steak, shrimp and vegetables. Items on the regular menu also can be ordered when eating hibachi style. The regular dining menu has teriyaki dishes, yakitori skewers, tempura and other Japanese cuisine. Fried tofu and miso soup are appetizing options. The sushi bar offers a variety of fish and seafood. Vegetarian sushi rolls are also available and are not covered with fish eggs! For the private tatami room one can pay an up front fee of usually $15, and order off the menu or choose a 7, 9, or 11 course dinner for $80-120. The tatami room includes a special server in a kimono. A custom menu also can be arranged.

If you are looking for a quality Japanese restaurant in Atlanta, Nakato is definitely worth a visit. The food and service are consistently good, and the prices are reasonable. The restaurant is in a slightly risqué part of town; some strip clubs are located nearby, but parking, safety and comfort have never been issues.
