Haandi Fine Indian Cuisine is a table service restaurant that offers Northern Indian style food. It opened in 1989. There are two locations: Falls Church and Bethesda, Maryland. The Falls Church restaurant is in a standard suburban commercial shopping center.
The dining room had a small rectangular shape. Booths lined the walls and tables were positioned in the middle. The waiters tended to stand near the back of the room near the bar. There was little privacy as the room was small and the tables were placed close together. Indian-theme decorations were unremarkable.
The food was average to good. The mulligatawny lentil soup was spicy and appetizing. It was served with lemon, which nicely enhanced the flavor. A vegetable samosa appetizer however was quite dry and flaky; a brown dipping sauce helped improve the dish somewhat. Onion kulcha bread was bland and the portion was skimpy. As for the entrees, the kadhai chicken served with rice was fairly good mainly due to copious spicy sauce. Chicken portions were modest but well cooked. Jhinga shahi shrimp with curry was above average and the curry taste was not overpowering. Regarding service, there were notable lapses. Entrees were served before the appetizers were finished and the appetizer dishes were not removed when needed to make room for the entrees. In addition, the server was somewhat gruff and unwelcoming. He did an adequate job but was far from personable. Haandi can draw a crowd and only accepts reservations on weekdays. Takeout is available and table service ends 30 minutes before the restaurant closes. There also is a lunch buffet. If you crave Indian food and are in the area, Haandi is an acceptable choice, but the restaurant does not merit a special trip just to experience its charms or lack thereof.
