Kenny & Ziggy’s New York Delicatessen Restaurant is a Jewish deli style restaurant with a huge menu and a sizable dining room. It’s located less than a mile from the Galleria Mall and is in a more upscale part of Houston. Parking is a breeze.
Kenny & Ziggy’s traces its roots to New York City delis run by the Gruber family, with the first location opening in 1927 on Broadway. The business expanded to Houston in 1999. A New York theme and style is evident in all respects here from the menu, décor and atmosphere and even some of the accents. The menu is vast, somewhat lighthearted and chock-full of meats, sandwiches, salads and breakfast items. The dining room is decorated with caricature sketches and Broadway posters. Seating was fairly spacious and background noise was reasonable.
Matzah ball soup is as basic to a Jewish deli as ravioli is to an Italian restaurant and the matzah ball soup here was filling and tasty. The portion was also enough for two people. The soup had a rich broth with ample carrots and celery, also the chicken was well cooked and tender. A vegetarian omelet with spinach, tomatoes and onions also was enjoyable with a balanced taste and larger than average portion. It arrived piping hot and at the same time as the rest of the dishes, reflecting good kitchen coordination. A potato pancake on the side had a well-seasoned taste but was a bit too crunchy and slightly overcooked. A seven layer dessert could have used a bit less sugar and was too moist, but if you have a sweet tooth it will likely hit the mark. Food portions here are larger than average and prices are slightly higher as well. On balance, the restaurant provides a satisfying meal and service was attentive and pleasant. With such a large menu, there should be plenty of alternatives for all tastes. If deli food is on the agenda and you have a craving for an authentic New York style deli, Kenny & Ziggy’s can offer a prescription for your ills.
