Preservation Hall is a jazz venue in the French Quarter of New Orleans. The music hall, which can accommodate about 100 people, is owned by a nonprofit foundation created to help preserve and perpetuate traditional jazz music. The music is normally played every night in three 45 minute sessions from 8-10 pm.

Preservation Hall and its related foundation have an interesting history. In the 1950s, a local art gallery owner organized nightly jam sessions by jazz musicians as a means to get to hear more of the music and to help preserve the art, which was losing ground to increasingly popular rock and roll. A couple who were visiting New Orleans and who were big fans of jazz learned of the shows and took an active interest in the concept. When they later moved to New Orleans, they assumed responsibility for the events and expanded the preservation theme to include more regular performances and road tours as well as establishing a non-profit foundation and a permanent home for the shows.

A line started forming an hour before the show on a Thursday night, so it pays to arrive early if you want to get a seat on one of the benches or on the floor. Otherwise, you get to stand in the back of the room. Five musicians each playing a different instrument performed classic jazz tracks to a packed house. The musicians were high quality and clearly enjoyed performing and also improvising at times. The 45 minutes went by fairly quickly and most of the audience seemed satisfied with the songs and performances. The music hall is small and basic by design to provide a more intimate musical experience, but the tradeoff is a cramped setting with scant privacy. VIP tickets are also offered for about double the regular ticket price and VIPs get a reserved seat without waiting in line. For fans of traditional jazz music or just those curious to hear what it’s about, Preservation Hall offers an accessible and affordable but no frills venue to experience it.
