The bar itself was smaller and the bar stools were cool looking but not comfortable. Also, the drink mixing was noisy.

Hang with me The Usual opened in 2009, and is a low-key watering hole with an emphasis on mixed drinks, both better known options and more obscure selections. The drink quality was reasonable, and prices were about average. The bar is located on mellow and slightly offbeat Melrose Avenue which is home to eclectic restaurants and a slightly countercultural crowd.

The Usual is a hangout place to go with friends and to kick back. The bar is in a non-descript brick building that is easy to miss, but parking was a piece of cake. Visiting around 7:00 on a Saturday night was early, and the bar was fairly empty. Background rock music was faint. The bar has one room with concrete floors and is sparsely but tastefully decorated. There are six privacy booths built with walls on three sides that would work for those into drinking games or seclusion. Both booths and tables can be reserved. A small terrace was dominated by smokers. The bar itself was small and noisy from drink preparation. The barstools were uncomfortable.

Drinks included a Fireside – bourbon with honey, lemon and angostura, a Montpelier – bourbon with maple syrup and rum, and The Last Word – gin, Green Chartreuse, Maraschino and lime. The Fireside was about average. It was drinkable but nothing really stood out, either the ingredients or alcohol content. The Montpelier was better and more distinctive especially with the maple syrup which gave it a robust flavor and smoother finish. The Last Word was the best drink of the night. It was an odd concoction of 4 diverse ingredients that blended well together and made for a more perfect union. It's something to be sipped and savored, though the portion was skimpy. The staff was welcoming, attentive and down to earth; the bartender shared insights about the drinks and answered questions. If you are looking for a relaxing neighborhood bar to enjoy mixed drinks, the Usual is a decent choice. It attracts a regular group of locals on weekends.
