The Kimbell Art Museum is located in heart of the Cultural District of Fort Worth and contains a varied collection of priceless art ranging in time from thousands of years ago to twentieth century European art. Although the collection is fairly small at 350 pieces, the quality of the art is extraordinary. In addition to the art, the museum building is considered an architectural landmark and has been widely acclaimed for its creative design.

The Kimbell Museum is the legacy of Kay Kimbell, a wealthy Fort Worth businessman and art collector. Kimbell and his wife established a foundation for their art holdings. The foundation opened the Kimbell Art Museum in a new building in 1972 shortly after Kimbell’s death. The building was designed by Louis Kahn and immediately drew raves for its imaginative use of natural light, classic vaulted ceilings, and innovative style. Over time however the collection outgrew its space and a new facility will open in 2013.

The Kimbell is famous and rightly so for an extremely impressive mix of art. The holdings include works from such European masters as Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Caravaggio and Cézanne to name just a few. There also are ancient sculptures, reliefs and other art from Africa, Latin America and Asia. To avoid competing with the Amon Carter Museum and the Modern Museum of Art, Kimbell does not collect modern art or American art. If you have a taste for fine art, Kimbell serves a delectable appetizer. The art is both accessible and affordable. Only the special exhibits have a fee. The museum’s website lists free lectures, workshops and films. A Kimbell visit also fits in well with a trip to the Modern, which is next door.
