The Westin Denver Downtown is a refined hotel in the heart of Denver. The hotel has 19 floors and was built in 1984. It’s also a nonsmoking property. Dogs are accepted without a fee, but a waiver is required. Rates for a standard room can range from $175-500 depending on the occupancy levels and time of year, and it costs about $40 extra to get a higher floor room with a mountain view. Self parking will add an extra $26 to your tab. Valet parking is $35.

The hotel has an unusual combination indoor/outdoor heated pool, and it’s open year round. A sizable workout area also includes an unusual half basketball court. Computers are available in the business center without an extra fee. Room service is offered 24 hours. There is a hotel restaurant, but it’s just open for dinner; a buffet breakfast is served in another part of the hotel. There also is a full bar. As for the immediate neighborhood, the Westin is next to the 16th Street Mall, which is a pedestrian oriented strip with numerous shops and restaurants. A few of many restaurant options include Cheesecake Factory, Capital Grille and Mellow Mushroom.

The shortcomings significantly outweighed the strengths at this hotel, so if that is all you need to read to make a lodging decision, then read no further. If you want to know the details then read on. A microwave was delivered upon request, but the room attendant did not bother to plug it in and seemed irritated when requested to do so. The room AC worked poorly, and the room was so stuffy at night that the temperature had to be adjusted in the middle of the night to make the room more comfortable. The alarm clock did not work properly, and a requested wakeup call on the first night of the stay never arrived, which is a major miss for any hotel but a huge miss for a top tier brand like the Westin. There was a stain on both the pillow and the bathrobe. Also, the bed was excessively soft and generally uncomfortable. A machine in the parking garage used to pay the parking fee did not work, and a hotel operator had to be called to override it, which took an extra 10 minutes. Positives were few but did include a spacious room, good city views on the pool deck and a pleasant front desk clerk at check-in. Also, the desk clerk at check-out was very apologetic about the poor experience and awarded a generous number of Starwoods points to compensate. From a cost to quality perspective, this Westin came up way short. While the hotel has a primo location, the experience was anything but.
