Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is a protected ocean cove located about 25 minutes from downtown Honolulu on the southeast corner of Oahu. While it is popular for swimming and snorkeling, the bay has suffered from years of overuse and neglect so there is not much underwater life to see. Also it can get crowded, especially on weekends, so expect some company.

Hanauma Bay was formed by an ancient volcano that eventually became dormant and began to erode. Ocean water breached the walls and filled the space. It was acquired as a park by the city of Honolulu in the 1920’s and became a popular beach in the 1950’s.

Some conservation steps have been taken to help the bay recover, including requiring visitors to watch a short film about protecting life in the bay, however the overall state of the corals are poor as can be noted in the pictures to the right. The fish are colorful but are few in number and sporadically seen. As a result, the quality of snorkeling here is subpar.

Hanauma Bay does have a clean beach with plenty of sand and warm ocean water. The preserve also includes a small museum with displays about sea life. There is a short but steep trail that leads to the bay from the parking lot. A shuttle offers transportation for a fee. If you drive here, be aware that cars will be turned away when the parking lot is full.

When looking to spend some time at a beach not far from Honolulu, this preserve is a fair choice. But if you are seeking a quality snorkeling experience in Hawaii, head over to Maui and check out Molokini Crater.
