The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is part of the National Air and Space Museum. It opened in 2003 and displays a range of aircraft and spacecraft that could not fit in the primary museum in Washington, D.C. The combined facilities display the largest collection of air and space equipment in the world. Free 90 minute tours are offered at the Udvar-Hazy center on a daily basis at 10:30 am and 1:00 pm.

The center was named for Steven Udvar-Hazy, who donated money to help build the museum. The main hangars for aircraft and space equipment are expansive at over 350,000 square feet. Additional facilities include an IMAX theatre, restoration hangar, observation tower and restaurant. The observation tower offers good views of nearby areas including Dulles Airport.

Museum walking tours depart at 10:30 am and 1:00 pm. The tours are limited to 15-20 people, but the museum offered additional tours to accommodate demand. Many of the tours are led by retired NASA or military professionals. The tours typically start with a visit to the Space Shuttle and space equipment and then veer off to explore various commercial and military aircraft. The tour was scheduled for 90 minutes but took about two hours as the group was highly engaged and asked the tour guide many questions. The guide had served in combat as a pilot and was both informative and entertaining. He spoke from personal experience about a number of the military aircraft and recounted stories from his career. Normally these types of museum tours are a good option if you don’t have time to see the entire collection, but this tour would be a smart choice even if you had already seen the museum. It was rich, insightful and personal. Your experience may vary depending on the guide, but if you get lucky and are led by guide who can speak from personal experience, it is well worth your time to tag along.
